Stephen Merkel Appointed Chairman of BGC Group’s Board of Directors

BGC Group a key provider of marketplace, data, and financial technology services across various sectors, serving major financial institutions, governments, and corporations worldwide, has announced the appointment of Stephen Merkel as Chairman of its Board of Directors. The decision follows Howard W. Lutnick’s confirmation as the 41st U.S. Secretary of Commerce, prompting his resignation as BGC’s Chief Executive Officer and Chairman. Merkel, who has been with BGC since its founding, will continue in his roles as Executive Vice President and General Counsel. In addition, Brandon Lutnick has joined the Board of Directors. Lutnick previously held Executive roles at Cantor Fitzgerald, where he oversaw corporate strategy and led various initiatives.

Merkel expressed gratitude for the appointment and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing BGC’s strategic vision. Howard Lutnick praised Merkel’s leadership and extensive experience, highlighting his contributions to the company over the past three decades. Alongside his new role, Merkel serves on the Board of Directors for BGC’s FMX business and holds executive positions within the Cantor Fitzgerald group of companies. Outside of his corporate responsibilities, he is involved in nonprofit organizations, including the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation.
