World Introduces Human Identity Verification in the U.S.

World, a digital identity and financial platform backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has officially launched in the United States. The platform allows users to verify their human identity through a biometric system involving a device called the Orb, which scans a person’s retina to create a unique World ID. This ID enables anonymous online identity verification while maintaining privacy. The service has debuted in six major cities — Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, and San Francisco — where users can access the full World App and claim Worldcoin (WLD) tokens. The World App also offers features such as digital wallets, mini applications in finance and education, and access to crypto-based tools.

World asserts that its system keeps user data secure, with biometric information stored locally on the user's device and not retained by the company. It uses advanced cryptographic methods to protect identity verification processes. While the platform presents itself as a solution to AI impersonation online, it has raised privacy concerns due to its data collection methods. Authorities in countries like Kenya, Portugal, Spain, Brazil, and Hong Kong have previously restricted the service over these concerns. Nevertheless, the U.S. rollout marks a significant step in the World’s effort to establish a framework for online proof of humanity.
