Scott Macfee’s career is a testament to the power of persistence married with continuous learning and growth. The Chief Executive Officer of Georgia-based fintech company SpendHQ, Macfee has been a management consultant, an e-business administrator, and an expert on corporate network infrastructure, a mix he used to become the Chief Operating Officer of government technology company Granicus in 2018.
Three years later, he was approached to become the head of SpendHQ, which didn’t have a full-time CEO. With full faith in the product, the team, and the potential for growth, he came aboard just as the company became independent in 2021. One year later, under Macfee’s watch, the company merged with French procurement performance management company Per Angusta, giving SpendHQ a global presence with “procurement DNA” baked in.
“Said another way,” Macfee recalled in a 2023 interview, “you would never run a sales team without Salesforce or a CRM to track and manage sales opportunities. That is the gap our Procurement Performance Management solution fills; a platform for procurement teams to manage and report on the opportunities they are executing to drive savings and corporate objectives.”
The Bucknell University graduate has made certain that SpendHQ’s solutions are comprehensive, leaving nothing to the imagination—especially not the chance to thrive. It’s not about having ideas. It’s about executing them. “What do you do with those insights?” he asked. “You still need to take those spend insights and convert them into savings opportunities, or opportunities to drive more value.”
Macfee follows two similar-sounding adages—“software eats expertise” and “culture eats strategy for breakfast”—to help keep SpendHQ at the top of its game. Long story short, the better the culture, the better the product; the better the product, the better the culture. That’s Macfee’s way, and it’s no wonder his customers follow along.
“At the end of the day,” he said, “consumer-centric fintech solutions are going to win.”
